Please introduce yourself
My name’s John Gaunt, I’m the joint managing director of Edwin Woodhouse - the company that owns Sunny Bank Mills; the home of fit20 Farsley. And I’ve been coming to fit20 for about 4 years now.
What made you interested to try fit20?
My problem was I was just frustrated at myself because I’m quite busy helping to run a business with a small family and I was frustrated at how unfit I was. But I couldn’t find the right way to get myself back in good trim.
What differences have you noticed since starting fit20?
The main differences are mental/wellbeing differences. You know when you have that sense of frustration when you know you haven’t done enough; that you’re not doing enough for yourself, but you don’t know how to deal with it?
Now I know that I’m doing it (exercise) regularly throughout the year, come rain or shine. No matter how crap I’m feeling I turn up and I do it. And that makes me feel good.
It gives me the confidence to take on swimming events (John recently completed a swim event up in Lake Windermere!) and I’m going to go for that because I’ve got an inner confidence in my strength and my body.
Any other benefits?
I’ve been injury free since I started more or less, and I’ve got quite a physical job; shifting bags of grit, awkward bits of furniture. It’s a 10 acre site looking after Sunny Bank Mills. And everything that’s thrown at me I’ve come out all right.
Why does fit20 work for you?
My main issue was time, so if anyone’s short of time and a similar story to me it’s almost tailor made for you. You can just come down in your office clothes and do your 20 minutes in an air conditioned environment so it’s very quick.
And you’re accountable; Stephen (fit20 Personal Trainer) is there chomping at the bit, waiting to get to training you, so it just works really well for me because it’s convenient, quick and targeted.
What would you say to somebody interested in fit20... but sceptical?
I was sceptical myself. So I think you probably just have to give it a go and keep at it for a bit. I always think fit20’s a bit like fine dining; it’s quite expensive. But it’s really high quality. And that’s just what you’ve just got to appreciate when you come here.
You’ve inspired others to join fit20 too.. How come?
I think it’s easy when you’ve bought into the product and it works well for you. It’s easy to look someone in the eye and say 'it works for me'. There are 100 businesses at Sunny Bank Mills, and I can see everyone’s busy with their work or their business and I can see everyone’s busy at home. And this is just a solution to that; keeping you fit in that period of your life.
I’ve got colleagues who have never joined a gym in their life that are now doing fit20, and have kept doing it.
