Mel’s Story:

From Achy Knees to Hiking Holidays with fit20 Moortown

At fit20 Moortown, we love celebrating the real-life stories of our members. Meet Mel Skotny, a 60-year-old semi-retired teacher who wanted to take charge of her health, feel stronger and keep her independence as she got older. After just over a year with fit20, Mel has experienced remarkable results that have transformed her everyday life.

I just feel healthier, more active and happier.

How were you feeling before joining?

"I was overweight. I had a sore shoulder. I had achy knees.

I'd eaten too much food during the covid period and stayed in and watched too much tv and I realised that I needed to get myself mobile and active.

Ultimately, I don't want to be like my elderly mother who's a little bit immobile. I wanted to make sure that I could extend my life by being fit and healthy."

What made you choose fit20?

"I saw it on facebook, and I read all the testimonials from other people, and I also thought I could fit it in. My life's really busy, and I thought that sounds ideal for me.

I wouldn't know how to go to a gym or operate a machine myself, but if I had somebody there to motivate me and to explain everything to me, I thought it was something I could actually do."

What results have you noticed?

"I have lost nearly three stone in weight, and that is not just fit20 but that's what started my journey; it made me want to eat more healthy food and to just take better care of myself. I walk all the time now; walking my daughter's dog, me and my partner, walk for miles every week, we go on really long hikes.

I even went on holiday to Cyprus and did an 11 kilometre hike with my children and they said it was something they wouldn't have believed that I could have done in the past. So it's made a huge difference.

I just feel healthier, more active and happier."

How do you find working with your fit20 Personal Trainer?

"That's one of the things I love about it because it's the same person every week. We built up a good rapport.

We have a lot of fun. There's a bit of banter, but I trust him. He knows what he's doing. He makes sure that everything's safe. Also gives us feedback and tells us, when we've increased the weights that we're working with and and we just feel like we're in safe hands

We wouldn't know what we were doing otherwise, if we went to a gym on our own.

Also, we like it because it's quiet. My partner's got aphasia and it's just the two of us in the gym with a Personal Trainer and we can hear everything. It's not too noisy, and it's just more personalised."

You’ve inspired a number of people to join fit20 too... how come?

"I just tell them about my own experience, I have encouraged quite a few other people, even my GP. When I went to see her, she said “you look great! What happened?”

I told her about fit20 and a few weeks ago I came here and she was just here with her husband and they've started too. So I just spread the word. I think people can see and they ask me, how come you've lost weight? How come you're so fit now? I just tell them."

What’s your key to sticking with it?

"I am motivated. I actually look forward to it every week. I don't like it if I have to miss a week for a holiday or anything like that. I really feel that it's part of my mindset now. It's part of my routine. I don't want to miss it. I look forward to it. It's fun, and I enjoy it :)."

Mel’s story is proof that it’s never too late to get stronger, healthier and more confident in your body. With the right support, even small steps each week can lead to life-changing results.
