Why hitting a fitness plateau

is a good thing

In a previous video, The fit20 Study debunked the myth that a strict 30 minutes per day fitness regime is the only way to get fit.

The best thing you can do is stay on the plateau!

In this video Dr James Steele addresses a myth that is just as persistent: the plateau myth. The idea that hitting a plateau in our fitness is a bad thing and that we should do something about it.

In reality the plateau is actually a false flat, that you reach after about a year of substantial strength gain. Dr Steele explains why fitness plateaus and how many studies have shown that even top athletes meet a plateau or ceiling, and although it is possible to make small progress after this time, this will take a lot of effort. Where this extra effort may be worthwhile for a top athlete, who just wants to set a slightly better or faster record, for the average person who trains to improve health, the best thing you can do is stay on the plateau!
